Levels of Nicotine on Finger Nails to Predict Lung Cancer

An interesting study has been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The study says that levels of nicotine are seen from the cut toenails to predict a person's risk of lung cancer. Researchers from the University of California San Diego; Harvard School of Public Health said the the study is trying to find out the number of cigarettes consumed ,through self reporting by patients can not accurately measure exposure to carcinogens (cancer-triggering substances) and to underestimate the adverse effects of smoking .

Therefore, the researchers tried to do research by using the pieces of the toe nails and found that in people who have the highest nicotine levels in its nail-risk 3.75 times more likely to suffer from lung cancer, regardless of smoking history report.

The scientists used a piece of the toe nails because nails grow slowly and over time, can provide a measure nicotine levels are more stable than saliva or urine. Chemical analysis of this kind is actually not new. Previously, hair analysis has been used extensively in the field of forensics and environmental science to detect exposure to toxic chemicals in the body. (medicastore/forum)
